St Clare was a friend of St Francis. She wanted to follow his model of poverty and depending on the Lord for everything. After some time, a group of ladies gathered around her and she formed a sister order to the order Francis formed – these are called the Poor Clares and follow the same rule of St Francis. St Clare was very highly revered for her simplicity and her spiritual teachings. She died peacefully of old age at 58, in Assisi, Francis’s home town.

Clare was born of a wealthy family in Assisi, Italy. As a teenager she became aware that Francis, the wealthy, handsome leader of youth in Assisi, had greatly changed. He used to spend a great deal of money having a good time. Now he had no money, no possessions, no family. he dressed in brown robe, begged for food, and lived on the streets. Yet he seemed to enjoy life more than ever.

O glorious Saint Clare!
God has given you the power of working miracles continually, and the favor of answering the prayers of those who invoke your assistance in misfortune, anxiety, and distress; we beseech you, obtain for us from Jesus, through Mary, His Blessed Mother, what we beg of you so fervently and hopefully, if it be for the greater honor and glory of God and for the good of our souls.
